They're actually quite different.
Automation Clips are a generator, a Channel. They can be activated via MIDI, saved as a preset .fst file, and are functionally treated like any other generator.
Envelope Controller uses Envelope State files, which contain different information than Automation Clips. Specifically, envelope stages (Decay, Sustain, Loop points) and Arpeggiator Data (next, same, previous note). These are saved as .fnv files.
While similar-looking on the surface, these two things are not interchangeable and serve very different purposes.
