Stereo Separation VS Stereo Shaper - What's the Difference?

Hey, what exactly is the difference between using the mixer's stereo separation knob and using Stereo Shaper (sending -6dB from left to right and vice-versa)? I thought they were supposed to do the same thing but the stereo separation sounds a bit louder at max and I haven't been able to get the two to cancel by switching polarity.
