What's the best quality audio people can hear?

I don't want to start an argument, I am not talking about master files or those that will have further processing on them (which should obviously be of the highest possible quality), but files that are of a reasonable size for distribution & storage e.g. online.

So what is the highest quality audio that people perceive as perfect? I recently converted my music library to 320kbps mp3 which seems to sound good to me. Is there any point having a FLAC or ALAC library instead?
