Compressor Q?

Is there a rule for using the release setting to match project tempo? Why doesn't the release re-trigger? I know it work over time. I use the compressor to shape my 808 kick but if I have a long release it fades the attack of the next kick (s). This all depends on the tempo. So.. Is there a chart or something in MS to match note length I could use to adjust the release accordingly?
