HAVING PROBLEMS RECORDING VOCALS!

Hey guys, I've been having a lot of problems recording vocals and having them sound good loud and vibrant. I'm using a focusrite 2i2 and an audio technica mic, I record through Edison then select a mixer channel and I usually add first a compressor, then some reverb, then a limiter but it never sounds ok. It's either too weak or just way too loud. I don't know if my track is too loud for the vocals or what. I have my mic set on 0db it has a -4db opinion on it but I not know anything about that. what am I doing wrong?
