LF Recording Environment vs. wav volume

It's been a few weeks since this happened so I can't swear to it. But I vaguely remember exporting a wav file out of the LF recording environment (playlist / mixer view etc) and the resulting wav was louder/richer/better. I also thought I remembered reading that this was normal because LF conserves resources to some extent while working on the playlist etc. Am I right about this? The reason I'm asking is because now when I export a wav it sounds good and all, but it doesn't take that leap up in loudness/quality/whatever. Do I need to change a setting?
