Getting unwanted distortion with Maximus

Hi everyone!

I am having a lot of problems with mastering. Every time I finish making a song I try to make it louder using Maximus. The problem is I can't make it as loud as normal songs on soundcloud without getting a ton of distortion.

I know that poor mixing can cause distortion but I think my mixing is done fairly well. My songs usually peak around -9db before I try to master it with Maximus.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
