When recording and overdubbing, 2 tracks is the limit

hi:
I am trying to record musical passages that I am playing into FL Studio 12.4.1 from numerous VST synth generators. I can hear the audio live, and can record a track, play it back and then overdub a counterpoint melody with it, and they are each on separate tracks, and all seems good. However, when I go to add a third track, I can hear the first note that I play, and then nothing else. And all that records is that first pulse. What am I doing wrong? thanks!
