Producing with tinnitus: stop or keep going?

Just that really.

I have tinnitus. It's getting worse the more I produce. I went and had my ears tested with an audiologist and I have lost a small amount of hearing in the 6k and 8k range in my left and right ears (but not both).

Every time I produce with my Yamaha HS5s, the ringing gets worse. It started about 2 years ago and the faint 'ssss' sound has got clearer and now it's a full-time ringing sound, just in my left ear.

I know there are all sorts of alternative remedies like ginko biloba, cranial massage etc. But I'm not that keen to try something unless there's solid proof/medical research to back up a drug that it does actually work.

I had a good look at the tinnitus drug pipeline for the next few years. Lots of companies trying to find a cure and a way to help the hairs in your ear regenerate. But so far nothing that's managed to achieve that.

I just wondered what other people do.

Do you keep producing or do you have to stop? In the end I don't want endless ringing in my ears. But I also don't want to stop making music either.

It seems like just producing with my monitors really sets it off. If I listen to tracks through my computer's crappy speakers I'm fine. Likewise, if I play the piano, I'm fine, no change. I read up and found that playing the piano is around 85db. And yet surely using monitors is no higher than that in db? I'm always really careful not to turn up the volume. Sit far away enough from the speakers etc.

And yet, still the ringing is worse.

I've been monitoring for sometime now so that's why I noticed it's just the speakers that sets it off. I produce in a loud echo-ey room, no room treatment at all. Would that make things worse?

Any thoughts anyone? In the end, is there anything I can do?

Thank you
