Volume fader take place after fx or before?

Okay, so I'm new to mixing and using compression in fl studio. Say I'm starting a mix and I go ahead and set all my basic levels using the volume faders in the mixer. Then, after that is done, I go to set up my compressor on a track and set the threshhold to say... -12db. If I go back later and change the volume on the fader, do I have to go back into my compressor and adjust the threshhold again? Or does the volume fader take place after the fx chain? If so, does that mean that all future volume tweaks have to be done through the makeup gain knob on the compressor? Cause I'd hate to have to do that because I like to "volume match" after compression so I can quickly toggle the compressor on an off to see if what I'm doing sounds better or worse (which is hard to do if you have two different volumes between the two).

Essentially, what I'm asking is does the audio signal go through the mixer like this?:

Audio signal>mixer channel>fx chain>master channel

Or this?:

Audio signal>fx chain>mixer channel>master channel

I'm sorry if this is a stupid question. I feel like I might be overthinking it.
