Automation help please

I have a 4 bar pattern that repeats 4 times on track one. I want to add a different type of gross beat automation to each of the four instances of the pattern. When I try and change the gross beat style at the end of the first four bars the recording stops and the affect is then added to all four instances of the pattern. How can I apply the four different styles of gross beat to the four instances of the patterns but separately?
