Just wondering if anyone else does this. In cases where the singer has a lot of dynamic and/or has to really belt certain notes/phrases, I have a hard time getting it to sit right in the mix just because the volume is all over the place. One thing that I have started doing is going into Edison and manually editing the volume by selecting phrases or even sometimes individual words and using the amp (alt+a) feature to boost or cut in 2db increments. And obviously the goal isn't to make everything the same volume and take the life out of the performance, but just to find the really loud or quiet notes and bring them down or up a little. Listen, boost, listen again, boost again if needed, etc... Just wanted to ask around and see if anyone else has done or still does this.
Also, I have a decent understanding of compressors and know that this is their primary function, I just like to go in first and tame the audio a bit and THEN let the compressor do it's thing. That way it's working more gently and I'm not having crazy amounts of gain reduction to tame the peaks.
Anyone else use Edison to level out vocals?
