Newbie Question about Compressors

Hi i'm a newbie to Music Production and i wanted to know how compressors really work.
I have read the section on the FL Manual but as much as i try it doesn't get stuck on my head.
I have trouble understanding the Threshold, Attack, Decay, Sustain etc.
Can some one explain it to me with pictures, examples, or really simple terms such as those use for first graders
