probably a stupid sidechaining question

I can only seem to sidechain sometimes and Im not sure why.

Lets say I have my kick on mixer channel 1, and chords on channel 2.
With the kick channel active, I right click on the arrow at the bottom of the chords channel and select "sc to this track", and then raise the sidechain volume
on the chords track, but if I have a delay on the chords track, the kick comes through and its also got a delay on it.
I just want the kick to make the chords duck, but all it does for me is make the kick louder and take on the EQ of the channel its sidechained to.

What am I doing wrong ?
