Boosting Volume as transparently as possible - limiter or Gain plugin?

Sometimes I run into the situation where I have really quiet samples or I want to use a piano sound library at really low velocities but I want to boost the gain afterwards. I'm always a bit torn on the best way to transparently boost the gain without coloring the sound. Does it make more sense to use a limiter or a gain plugin like Fruity Balance? I'm talking about single tracks here, not the master. Anyone have any thoughts?
