Dropping Instruments/Breaks

I'm sure this is a really elementary question that has a very simple solution...but how do I simply remove one sound from a pattern without removing it from the entire track? For example, removing a string or snare etc. from a few bars but then allowing the sounds to return a few bars later...I assumed that you just unhighlighted the circular knob, but every time I do that it removes the particular sound from the whole track. Thanks for reading...
