directwave instrument - how to control note velocity

I've created a directwave instrument and I want to vary the velocity of the notes in the piano roll, just as in any other FL synth but it doesn't seem to work.

I've linked note velocity to voice gain in the mod matrix but the gain is constant no matter how much I tweak the note velocities of the notes in the piano roll

what am I doing wrong?
