Intel's latest generation of CPUs ("Coffee Lake") has an i3 processor that outperforms once-flagship i7 2600K in Passmark out-of-the-box.
It's interesting to me because the 2600K is what I'm still running. There are (believe it or not) 7 years between the release of these processors, and this i3 is maybe not quite what I'd call dirt cheap with a MSRP of ~$180 (availability is limited right now), but that's half what the cost of the 2600K was when I picked it up for $360.
AMD's Ryzen processors have pushed multi-core performance to new limits, and Intel has responded with better performance in that regard in Coffee Lake as well, which is likely beneficial to the audio processing we do.
Meanwhile my overclocked 2600K still obliterates everything I do in FL. I don't even pay attention to the CPU meter anymore, but I never seem to see it pass about 20% with an 8ms buffer.
Soon anyone with a mid-range off-the-shelf PC will be able to run virtually any project in FL with little issue. But it seems a waste to leave all those CPU cycles unutilized. How do you think we'll end up making use of this processing power in the future of music production?
