The envelope controller

I have a problem with the envelope controller. When i try to use it for something, it only activates on the moment a key is pressed on the piano roll and after that it won't continue adjusting the knob i have set it to. Do i have to put 100000 notes/second to the piano roll to make the envelope controller to automate things smoothly? Please, if you can, help the noob in trouble
