i don't see the connection between ram-usage and workflow.
newer versions of any software will not even run on older computers, that is always the case but you still can use fl9.
yes there is more ram available because 32-bit variables can not address more ram then ~ 4gb (they could with some more complex schemes).
so it is more or less a side effect, that more ram is available now.
64 bit means 2^64 possible values (different bit combinations) for each value one machine-register can hold and these values are used to address ram as well.
2^32 = 4294967296, which gives your 4 GB address-space limit.
2^64 = 18446744073709551616, obviously much larger.
