UAD and Powercore

I've been reading old posts about external DSP cards such as UAD and Powercore. I'm still unsure about how they integrate into FL. For instance, can they be used as insert effects on any track, or are they purely for mastering? Also, there seems to be difficulties when rendering.

There are mixed opinions about their worth when used with FL. Can I please hear some more?
