Mastering?

I'm a new user to Fl Studio(less then a year). So far when i make a new song i just have the Fruity Limiter on my master channel. Recently i have taken that away and now i send all of my sample's to the mixer. Now in the mixer i use a EQ on all of my sample's. I might have a bass drum so i have the EQ set for lower freq and if i have a lead/piano/string etc i will have more high freq. Am i doing this right? I mean it makes my song sound better.

Finally i don't really know when to use a compressor? I think that's what you use to make quiet sound louder or i might be wrong.

If i could get some feedback on this it would be much appreciated.
