Question Regarding Some Vocabulary (new user)

I have been seeing the word synthesis a lot. Thing is, I have no idea what it means, does, or how it can help me from a musical standpoint. I'll give you a quote from the most recent sentence I have seen using the word "synthesis". I ask that someone please explain to me what the word and the quote mean. This is straight from the FL Studio 9 user manual, "Instruments generally fall into two types, software synthesizers that create audio using an internal 'synthesis engine' and..." (end quote) From what I gather by reading the sentence is that software synthesizers create audio using an internal synthesis engine, but really, I have no idea what that means, or maybe, I just need to know how a synthesis engine works. Bottom line is, I still feel unsure of what the word "syntheses" means. I'm sure when it comes to a musical standpoint it is something great that can help me a lot, but I need to know what it means, does, and how it can help me. Thank you SOO much in advance.
