Different types of synthesis?

Can anyone please help me by explaining in 'laymans terms' very simply what the different types of synthesizers do?

Like a frequency modulator compared to a subtractive.. I feel I know very little when I look into this subject..

I have read up on wikipedia but still fell lost by the terminology and the depthness of synthesizers!
