Upward/Downward Compression/Expansion in Maximus?

Alrighty, I have a question for you. I was reading Bob Katz's Mastering Audio book, and it explained about downward compression, upward compression, downward expansion, and upward expansion. Now, downward compression is pretty much self-explanatory as it is the most popular form of compression. How do I shape the variable compression curve to get the other three forms of dynamic manipulation? Any help is appreciated.
