Really basic question for newbie

Hi all, I'm just learning the ropes and having a blast with the Signature edition. I wondered how to switch off an instrument when it's part is done. I have synth notes and riffs continuing to play when they are finished on the timeline?
I'm going through the tutorials slowly, and it all seems fairly straight forward, except this one simple thing!"
