maximus mid master mode + linear phase big difference?

i've noticed that turning on linear phase when using mid master mode makes a big difference in the sound. Specifically it preserves more low end/high end. I want to be sure i'm not causing phase cancellation when not using linear phase.

The main question: is this difference in sound just because the linear phase filter slopes are sharper or more defined? as I understand it, the mid channel in mid master mode is only a sidechain signal so phase cancellation shouldn't be an issue, even if using wet dry (LMH mix). it seems to make more sense to use non-linear phase filters in mid master mode but I want to be sure i'm not causing phase cancellation.

secondary issue: linear phase doesn't seem to be compensated properly in maximus. Using linear phase + mid master mode on my drum bus will allow for a sharper fuller sound but the drums will be out of time with the rest of the song
