Vista to Wins 7 Need advice.

My Toshiba Satellite P300D came with Vista installed and I’m not loving
it but I’m stuck with the P300D because it was a gift and that’s what I’m
using on the road right now， besides not thinking of getting another
laptop at least not till this coming Christmas.
I want to upgrade to Wins 7 but always hesitates thinking about
some of my favorites free old Plugins and Hardware not supporting
driver updates for wins 7.
Another thing I’m afraid of been force to buy upgrades for
DAW (not FL) I already owned.
For example, I had to pay for an upgrade of Pro Tools 7 to
Pro Tools 8 because Pro Tools 7 can’t be install on Vista.
Vista is very slow and not stable in my opinion.
Someone please help me out here on what’s the best OS for my laptop.
