I purchased a Novation Launchpad recently because I want to use it for a live set, but then I realized you can't customize much even with Automap. I did some searching around and came up with a solution. It does cost a little money, but the end result is great and I don't know of any other controllers that compare for the price.
First off I'm running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit so this tutorial is going by that.
I'll go ahead and explain step by step what to do.
Step 1. Buy a Novation Launchpad from: http://www.proaudiostar.com/novation-launchpad.html#buy (call to get a discount) , or http://www.amazon.com/Novation-Launchpa ... 476&sr=8-1
Or just buy it from a local store. There aren't any in my area.
Step 2. Install Novation drivers first, and make sure they are up to date! http://www.novationmusic.com/support/launchpad/ Plug the Launchpad into the usb port you will be using it on (I'll explain later)
Step 3. Go to http://www.midiox.com/index.htm?http:// ... /myoke.htm download "MIDI Yoke NT 1.75" . This part is important. In order to install this on Windows 7 / Vista you have to first disable UAC (user account control), RESTART, then install MidiYoke, Re-enable UAC if you like, then restart again.
Step 4. Download and install the latest version of Java from here: http://www.java.com/en/
Step 5. Go to http://www.midikatapult.com/Katapult/Download.html and download (buy it if you like it) VERY IMPORTANT. So I was freaking out because I downloaded this and it would not find my Launchpad even though I had it working before. I discovered after a ton of experimenting that MidiKatapult is always going to look for the Launchpad on the usb port you plugged it into for the FIRST time. Sure I could probably uninstall the driver for each usb port I've plugged it into, but that's a pain to do. (I'm feeling to lazy right now)
When you first open MidiKatapult and if everything goes right the Launchpad should start displaying a demo screen with a bunch of flashing colors and such. It will ask what MIDI channels you want to use. Select MidiYoke (you have to use your arrow keys to navigate the menu.)
And there you go!
In the folder of MidiKatapult there is a text file called "layout" that is where the layout is stored and you can customize how you like. The creator of the application put in a lot of side notes into the files so don't be afraid to poke around.
If you have any questions let me know, and we can use this thread to share layouts discuss things and so on.
Enjoy!
