What's the best way to go about mixing a song?

Should I just start out with Fruity Limiter an try to get the song to sound good as I'm making it, should I not use any plugin on the master channel at all, or should I use something when the song is finished, like Soundgoodizer?

I have no idea how to song to be reasonably loud and sound good.
