New User Question: Channels in Patterns

I'm new to FL and have a question about patterns and channels. I create a drum pattern with kick and a snare using the default pattern 1. If I create a new pattern with a different instrument channel and erase the other channels (kick, snare, etc.) it also erases them in pattern 1. What am I doing wrong?
