How to detect tempo of mp3? for referencing..

How can you detect the tempo of say a 4minute long mp3 after dropping in the playlist?

I've tried the fit to tempo and the detect tempo option in the sample and stretching and adjusting but to no avail. I know how to adjust a 4 bar wav sample to fit but not a whole 4 min length.
Any ideas?
