Recording Vocals....

So I have the Blue Yeti USB and love the mic....my question to you seasoned producers with vocal recording experience is that I have problems getting consistent volume when recording vocals and am wondering if it is ok to use a limiter compressor while recording or better to do post processing and record dry.For example: I have a cousin who would sing for me and she was good but when she hit high notes and got loud of course, then the sound would distort.I don't really know how to properly record vocals but am learning a lot about compression and how it works. What is the advice that ya'll have for me and tips if any can be given...I will be checking up on youtube for videos on this too...
