This tutorial will show you how to sidechain only the low frequencies of a sound by using the Peak controller and an EQ.
This is a great trick to use on things you want to stay up front in the mix, such as your leads, while still allowing you to control the low end in the mix. This way they will retain most of their rhythm.
There are other dedicated plugins out there, such as the sidechain plugin from Waves that will do the same thing, but this is how it can be done with the stock plugins.
