not letting me record sounds over other sounds

i layed down a drum track, now im trying to lay another sound over that track

but whenever i hit the pad to trigger the new sound

it gets cut off from completion by the drums in the previous track

how can i get it to play nicely both sounds (both tracks) inhabiting together not cutting each other off, thanks
