Can a single control manage multiple instruments?

For example, a single control managing a parameter no matter which instrument/channel/track is active.

The application varies whether on mixer, pattern, individual effect/instrument, etc. but there are many, many controls that are the same-but on different...

For example, I can assign pitch, and when I change instruments, the same knob does pitch. But I can't do this with volume-the assignment sticks with the instrument, and is unaware that another is selected/being edited...

Hard to ask this without it being confusing...
