Using Xbox 360 controller for MIDI?

I recently got my Xbox 360 wireless adapter, and I'm wondering what is the easiest way to use my controller as a MIDI device in the same manner as an actual MIDI keyboard. I've had lots of fun making things in Flowstone, and using the joystick functionality in XY Controller, but what I want is a way to have it control the currently focused VSTi. I found a rather convoluted tutorial on Youtube, and I'll happily look into that, I'm just wondering if there is a simpler way.
