No sound with FPC

I have just decided to use FPC. The first time I tried it I thought it would come in very useful later. Now, I want to use it but I can't get any sound out of Fruity. If I click on the large buttons I get percussion sounds but if I use the piano roll I get no sound when I click the transport button, although there are keyprints on the the roll and the cursor works. If I click on a preset it is loaded into the piano roll but still no sound. I cannot remember how I got sounds before. The sounds are listed in the piano roll but keys corresponding to those sounds are silent. I have included a pattern block in the playlist just in case. I am sure that I have seen a percussion generator which gives the different instruments in the piano roll. I would rather go along that road than have separate generators for each percussive sound. Can anyone help please.
