Browser is blank, "Search Canceled"

I have a problem, it happened with FL Studio 6 and now it's happening with 8. Most of the time, when I start up the program, the browser is blank. And if I try to open a project, the VST's associated with it do not work. I'm not sure why this happens. I am using a pc dedicated for the music and I am running the programs from an external hard drive, so PC does not get clogged. Sometimes, the program will start up normally, but then something will happen and the next thing I know, I try to go in one of the browser folders and it says "Search canceled". And I have to save my project, and shut down. Sometimes, it works better after a restart, and sometimes it has no effect at all. Same problem. Can anyone help? Thanks.
