Can't Upload Photo?? - That's all it says?

I've created a photo blog page. That is fine. When I sign in as admin and try to upload a single or multi-upload, all I get is 'File could not be uploaded'.

No other messages at all. I've created a new asset folder for these images. I've tried a single upload and it says nothing. Only when I try to upload more than one (just two) it gives me this no-sense message. The file(s) are about 300K each so well withing the 2M limit (why is there a limit?).

I haven't tried one of these photo-blogs in quite a while, but I think it used to work.
