Tuning forks

Due to a hearing test... I find myself curious about the sound made by tuning forks.
I know there are different types, but they seem to be a really pure sort of wave, yet they are also really dynamic in some ways.
But I question... is the modulation sometimes heard when they are ringing/fading a flaw in the fork? Or is it natural that they act that way?
I want to say also that they are sine wave, but... is that true? Or are they more square?

I'm going to try and use Sytrus to reproduce one, but would definitely like to hear opinions on what all is going on when a tuning fork is struck. My mind might just be reading *too much* into the sound structure. :)
