Angelic choir

So, the youtube video linked has some great elements, but the "angelic" vocals are what I am wanting to learn more about.

I'm not even sure if it's possible to tell, but my ears aren't practiced. Are the "voices" chords being played in a given progression/style, or is it a series of samples of a choir singing the chords?
I know that taking one sample and then pitching it up/down can result in undesirable effects to the sound, and while I do hear some of that on the low end, in my personal experimentation, the problems with pitch changes show up within half an octave or so, and these chords don't, to my ear, do that.

Not looking so much for a patch that mimics this (wouldn't complain), but trying to understand what cues to listen for that can help determine if the sound is a sample being played in chords, or just a single note playing a sampled chord.
