Automate Gross Beat volume mix or mixer FX slot Mute/solo?

Why may I not automate the Gross Beat volume mix?
I can create the automation clip but it does not work most of the time on playback.

Or alternatively, why can't I automate the Mute/solo for a Gross Beat effect in the mixer channel FX slot?

What I am trying to do is pause and restart the Gross Beat while the track is playing.
If I do it manually by clicking on Mute/solo in the mixer channel FX slot I get some great effects.

I know I could create new volume presets in Gross Beat which would give the same result, but I would need about 12 of them.
