DirectWave Preset confusion

So I recently purchased and installed the Generic Sample cd and it says to install in directwave data folder. I did and all of the files that are .wav show up in the plugin. However the .fst files do not load onto the plugin even though they show up in the browser as wav files and clickable samples. When I installed them in the presets folder they show up in the presets of directwave dropdown menu but selecting them does nothing. There are a bunch of sounds there and I would like to figure out how to make them useable. What am I missing?
