Can't hear effects thru headphones

I've been borrowing an AI and have FL set up so i hear effects thru my headphones only. Worked great.

Switched AI to a Scarlett 2i4, 2nd gen. This AI has a few more bells and whistles than the previous one (Roland Quad Capture).

Now i cannot hear effects thru the headphones. The Scarlett has Direct Monitoring, which I've disabled -- according to Focusrite site, turn knob to "playback", which i did. Nothing changes.

I'm relatively new to recording and FL and have sometimes accidentally enabled or disabled something in FL without realizing it, and causes me great grief.

Any ideas here? Thanks!
