Instead of working on the loads of incomplete stuff I have on the go, I got sucked into making a new song this weekend. I'm going to try and exert some discipline and get back to finishing things up, but in the meantime, I thought I might as well just throw this one out there too.
Chorus vocals definitely need to be re-recorded, as does the guitar outro (I just nicked a take from the solo) and the organ was just me messing around and recording what I was playing without any real plan. So yeah, view the individual parts as placeholders, I'm more interested in feedback on the general vibe and concept.
Suggestions on the arrangement are welcome. Could it use some brass? Or would that be overkill? Does it need backing oohs/aahs or something like that? I still need to differentiate the sections better.
Lyrics took me forever to write this time. The title came to mind while jamming over the chords (which I've had stuck in my head for a week), but actually writing a song around the idea wasn't so quick.
So I'd love to know what you interpret into the lyrics. If you'd be willing to share your insights, I'd love to hear them.
VerseIn a long and bygone age, there lived a wily sage
They said that he could read, that which was decreed,
It was as they feared, the signs had just appeared, the script it used was weird
Oh save me!
<CHORUS>
While we revel in the sun, we know the yet to come, the ending has begun
Oh baby!
And while we can’t read it all, the writing’s on the wall, the kingdom left to fall
Forsake me!
<CHORUS END>
Evil eyes and phalluses on the walls of palaces
And the house of ill-repute, Severus had a dispute
But the fire rained down, and burned up the whole town, but didn’t tear them down
They’re waiting!
CHORUS
And the schism of west and east, unleashed the fiery beast
And the slogans on the wall, exhort the wall to fall
Cos the wall divides, unites those on both sides, the words shall be our guides
Come join me!
CHORUS
Empty slogans, memes and threats, the wall never forgets
A reflection of the times, for those who read the signs
And I tell you all, the writing’s on the wall, but I can’t read the scrawl,
So aid me!
CHORUS
Am C6/G D9/F# Fmaj7 x2
C E7 Am C6/G Fmaj7 C F G
Chorus
C E7 Am C6/G Fmaj7 Em11 Am G
C6/G: 3-0-2-0-1-0
D9: 2-0-0-2-1-0
Em11: 2-0-2-0-0-0
I was initially viewing this as possibly Am13, but with the other instrument parts I think it's an E chord in context
