Given the silly 80s style lyrics, this makes me think of some of those singles that got released as the 4th or 5th single off an album that was unexpectedly a hit. They'd essentially run out of actual singles, and went with something inoffensive that would sell on the back of the previous hits. And now, 30+ years on, everyone's forgotten it.
What do you reckon?
I’ve sailed the seven seas of romance,
And now I find I’m stuck in no man’s
Land
This vessel can’t be manned
Cos the sea can be a fickle mistress
I’m putting out a plaintive distress
Call
Pride precedes a fall
So they sat me down with Captain Mabel
And she laid her cards on the table
Our course is set and the winds are stable
Her crew is made up of willing and able
men
She likes to call them “friends”
We started out with clement weather
And to shouts of all together
Now
As we lifted up the brow
Setting sail we left the harbour
And pretty soon we battled our first
Storm
Our ship battered and forlorn
So they sat me down with Captain Mabel
And she laid her cards on the table
Our course is set and the winds are stable
Her crew is made up of willing and able
men
She likes to call them “friends”
When we hit the straits of Madagascar
That’s the moment when I thought I’d ask her
Hand
But she said well I’ll be damned
I’ve sailed the seven seas of romance,
And now I find I’m stuck in no man’s
Land
And this vessel’s overmanned
So they sat me down with Captain Mabel
She laid her cards on the table
Her course is set and the winds are stable
Her crew is made up of willing and able
men
She likes to call them “friends”
So they sat me down with Captain Mabel
She laid her cards on the table
Her course is set and the winds are stable
She’s surrounded by willing and able
men
She likes to call them “friends”
