May be a way to make a project easier to understand and make it cleaner. For example if you have an automation which always follows an instrument, then you could just merge them into one pattern. Maybe it will be easier to experiment with different thing, without making the playlist messy. You could just clone an idea, and then tweak the automation clip inside the new pattern without screwing with the cloned idea.
