How important is single thread performance vs other CPU functionality?

I know this topic has been brought up several times but I was wondering if anyone could clarify just how important single thread performance is. If it was the only factor for choosing a DAW CPU then, according to the chart from CPU Benchmark, an i3-7350k is better (and much cheaper) than an i7-6700k. Is this true or is it more complicated?
