Why do my kicks sound so muddy, boomy and throbby and poor?!

Hey dudes,

I'm just pulling my hair out wondering why in world i can't get a solid, phat sounding kick without it sounding muddy, resonant and boomy! I a/b check with some other kicks, on the same speakers which sound tight, phat, round and solid, for me it just doesn't seem to be working...

I've tried layering, agressive eq'ing, multiband compression, bussing, the works... any techniques here?

I most often get to a point where i've layered 2 or 3 (usually 2) kicks, seperated them for their attack, decay or high end etc...yet it's obviously the low end decay kick that causes trouble, i try high pass filtering below say 30hz-50hz or even 60hz, but can't find that sweet spot, it's always to boomy and unspleasant sounding, to to boxy and weak sounding...

I know it's a pretty subjective topic, and multiple things should be considered, but i've got awesome samples, decent plugins, good enough monitors...yet i'm a bit stuck...

Any suggestions?
